Why Buy the 2018 Honda Pilot

Debuting in 2002 for the 2003 model year, the Honda Pilot has since been ensconced in the upper echelon of the midsize crossover market. With its unibody construction, standard V6 engine, roomy cabin, and rich collection of safety features, the vehicle looks like an SUV while driving like a four-door sedan.

Exterior - Reasons Why Buy the Pilot

Outside, the features of the 2018 Honda Pilot include multi-reflector halogen headlights with auto-off ability (when there's enough light outside) and power side mirrors. On the EX and above, the headlights have both on and off ability, there's heating ability on the side mirrors, and fog lights appear below the headlights. The EX-L and up get a power moonroof and power liftgate. Upgrading to the Touring adds roof rails and links the aforementioned memory system to the side mirrors, which also have reverse tilt-down ability. Exclusive to the Elite are LED headlights (instead of halogen ones) and a panoramic roof.

Typically, the Honda Pilot's three rows can accommodate up to eight people. The lone exception is the top-level Elite, which swaps the bench-style seat at the second row with a pair of captain's seats to reduce maximum occupancy to seven. The amount of passenger space also differs by trim; it's 152.9 cubic feet on the LX and EX, 151.7 cubic feet on the EX-L and Touring, and 153.1 cubic feet on the Elite. The cabin is acoustically tweaked to keep away unwanted noise (Active Noise Cancellation™). Standard cargo space is measured between the third row and liftgate, although you can fold down the second and third rows to maximize it.

On the EX, the driver's seat is enhanced with 10-way power adjustability and power lumbar support. One-touch power-foldable second-row seats, leather upholstery (which includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel), and front-seat heating capability appear on the Pilot once you get to the mid-level EX-L. The upper-level Touring and Elite have a two-position memory system added on the driver's seat. The Elite is the only trim with both heating and cooling capability on the front seats, as well as steering-wheel heating capability and perforated leather-trimmed heated second-row captain's seats.

Standard comfort and convenience features include push-button engine start, cruise control, a 5-inch color LCD screen for displaying infotainment information, Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, a USB port and auxiliary audio jack for connecting mobile devices, remote keyless entry, and a 4.2-inch multi-information color LCD screen. Going with the EX adds remote engine start, smart entry (i.e., spruced-up remote keyless entry), tri-zone automatic climate control, the HomeLink® universal transceiver for remote-controlling home features like security lights and garage doors, an extra USB interface, an 8-inch high-resolution screen (in place of the 5-inch), Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ for smartphone-based control of infotainment functions, hands-free text messaging ability, HondaLink® remote connectivity, and a trial SiriusXM® satellite radio subscription. Starting from the EX-L, the SUV gets an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Touring and Elite are joined with a voice-activated satellite-linked navigation system, a second-row Blu-Ray-based rear entertainment system, and dual second-row charging-only USB ports. Only the Elite has HD Radio™.

Mechanical / Powertrain - Request More Information

Powering the 2018 Honda Pilot is a 3.5-liter V6, which produces 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. While the engine on the LX, EX, and EX-L is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, the upper-level Touring and Elite get a 9-speed automatic transmission. Also accompanying the engine on the Touring and Elite is idle stop technology, which means that the engine shuts down when you come to a stop and it turns back on when you resume driving. There's the option, though, of going with an all-wheel-drive system; it is standard on the Elite. An "intelligent traction management" system is present on all trims above the LX for adjusting the powertrain components appropriately to specific road or weather conditions (i.e., snow, sand, and mud). The 2018 Honda Pilot uses a MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension to combat road turbulence as a result of driving on less-than-smooth surfaces. The SUV uses electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering for a turning diameter of 39.4 feet. And power-assisted ventilated front disc and solid rear disc brakes are present for supreme stopping ability.
