2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid vs 2021 Toyota RAV4

Combining practicality and performance with money-saving fuel efficiency, hybrid SUVs are rapidly racing to the top of the charts in this hotly contested market.

Two of the top contenders in this crossover SUV category are Honda’s popular CR-V Hybrid and Toyota’s RAV4 Hybrid. While the new CR-V Hybrid remains relatively unchanged for the new model year, Toyota has yet to release details on its upcoming 2022 RAV4 model. So, we’ll be comparing the 2022 Honda model with the 2021 Toyota model in this article. Here’s how these two great hybrid SUVs look side by side.

Honda and Toyota take somewhat different approaches to designing the exteriors of their hybrid crossover SUVs. With the 2022 CR-V, Honda goes for a design that’s sporty, sleek, and sophisticated. Its aerodynamic silhouette starts with a modernistic front end that features a slim front grille flanked by a string of LED headlights. It’s bold without being overpowering. This same “less is more” design philosophy features a side profile that minimizes cuts, creases, and character lines for a more refined look. The same is true for the CR-V’s clean and uncluttered rear deck, which features slim LED taillights that wrap around the top rear quarter panel.

On the other hand, Toyota’s RAV4 Hybrid emphasizes a more aggressive and “in-your-face” look. The front is dominated by a large, drooping egg-crate grille and even larger lower fascia. It’s a look that may seem a bit out of sync with the rest of the vehicle’s proportions.

Interior Comfort And Convenience

2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid Interior

The 2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid EX’s spacious, quiet, and well-appointed interior pulls ahead of the comparably equipped 2021 Toyota RAV4 XLE Hybrid in several key areas. With 102.9 cubic feet of passenger space, the CR-V Hybrid easily outmatches the RAV4’s smaller, 98.9 cubic feet of passenger volume. That means Honda’s CR-V Hybrid offers nearly four more cubic feet of interior room than its competitor.

As a result, the CR-V Hybrid EX offers more front and rear legroom, and more front and rear hip room compared to its Toyota rival. But that’s not all. In addition to more passenger volume, the CR-V EX Hybrid offers standard heated front seats, a real plus for those cold Colorado winters. If you want heated front seats in the 2021 RAV4 XLE, they’re a pricey option.

The 2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid EX also takes comfort and convenience to the next level with a standard moonroof, standard remote engine start, Easy Fold-Down 60/40 split rear seats, and the added security of standard Walk Away Auto Lock®.

Technology & Infotainment

2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid Technology

Both the CR-V Hybrid EX and RAV4 Hybrid XLE come well equipped with an array of the latest connectivity and infotainment technologies.

In popular EX trim, the 2022 Honda CR-V offers the following standard features: Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration, a 7-inch Display Audio Touchscreen, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, Bluetooth® Streaming Audio®, Pandora® compatibility, subscription-based SiriusXM Radio®, HD Radio™, and an upgraded 180-watt, 8-speaker Audio System.

The 2021 RAV4 XLE has a similar complement of infotainment and connectivity capabilities, but only offers a 6-speaker audio system by comparison.

Performance, Handling & Fuel Economy

Like two thoroughbreds, the Honda CR-V EX and RAV4 XLE run neck-and-neck when it comes to performance, handling, and fuel economy.

At these trim levels, both the CR-V and the RAV4 offer standard All-Wheel-Drive (AWD), which is a much sought-after feature here in the Denver metro area. The CR-V EX’s standard Real-Time AWD with Intelligent Control System™ features Honda’s most advanced AWD technology.

On the Toyota side of the ledger, the RAV4 Hybrid XLE counters with its own Electronic On-Demand AWD system. Unfortunately, Toyota’s more advanced Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD system isn’t available on the LE Hybrid, XLE Premium Hybrid, or XSE Hybrid models.

In terms of performance and fuel economy, the CR-V Hybrid comes equipped with a 2.0-liter, DOHC i-VTEC Atkinson-cycle, four-cylinder engine mated to Honda’s exceptional e-CVT transmission. A pair of electric motors generate a responsive 212 total system horsepower, with an impressive, EPA-estimated 40 mpg city and 35 mpg highway, for a combined EPA-estimated rating of 38 mpg overall.

The CR-V Hybrid EX also offers a Hybrid Driver Information Interface that provides a graphic status of the engine, electric motor, and regenerative braking. Additionally, you can take control with three distinct drive modes: ECON, Sport, and EV. While in EV mode, you can drive the CR-V Hybrid exclusively on electric power under certain conditions.

The RAV4 Hybrid XLE barely edges out the CR-V by offering just 7 more combined net horsepower and slightly better fuel economy.

Safety Features

Honda offers some of the most advanced standard active safety features in the industry. Its comprehensive suite of Honda Sensing safety technologies makes the 2022 Honda CR-V one of the safest hybrid SUVs on the road today. These key safety features include:

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™)
  • Road Departure Mitigation System
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane-Keeping Assist
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Forward-Collision Warning
  • Lane-Departure Warning

Additionally, you can also equip your CR-V with a Blind-Spot Information System, Cross-Traffic Monitor, and Auto High-Beam Headlights for an extra layer of protection.

The RAV4 comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 which offers similar capabilities, such as traffic-sign recognition and lane-keeping assist.

Honda’s CR-V Hybrid Comes Out on Top

While there are similarities between Honda’s 2022 CR-V Hybrid EX and Toyota’s 2021 RAV4 Hybrid XLE, the CR-V clearly comes out on top with its more sophisticated and sporty styling, more passenger room, and more standard convenience and comfort features than its competitor, making it one of the best hybrid crossover SUVs on the market today.
