Honda Civic: Which Model is Right for You?

The Honda Civic is one of the best compact cars on the market. In 2017, it was named the most popular car among millennial shoppers. Today, the Civic is still going strong among millennials and boomers alike. To put it simply, it’s the perfect car for just about anyone with a pulse and a driver’s license.

Available in several different body styles, the 2020 Civic offers something for every driver. Here’s how the models break down:

Civic Sedan

1177 × 486

The Sedan has four doors and comes in the base LX, EX, EX-L, Sport, and Sport Touring trims. In the LX and Sport version, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is standard. This motor is capable of 158 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with a six-speed manual transmission. If you're not a fan of the classic gearbox, a CVT is also an option.

Many critics reported that the standard engine is both fast and fun to drive. The base sedan also comes with nice infotainment offerings. A five-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration, Bluetooth, a rear-view camera, and automatic climate control are all included.

Civic Coupe/2-Door

1157 × 509

The coupe is the same as the sedan in many aspects, with a few key differences. It only has two doors and a more stylish, sporty exterior. You can purchase the coupe in any trim except for the EX-L. Thanks to its more aerodynamic design, it also has less cargo space than the sedan.

It still has the same engine, seating capacity, and technology features as the sedan models. Each Civic also comes with the standard Honda Sensing suite of safety features. This includes pre-collision warning with braking, automatic high-beams, and lane-keeping assistance.

Civic Hatchback/Hatch

1158 × 433

As its name suggests, the hatch opening is what sets it apart from the Honda Civic coupe or sedan. The latter two feature traditional storage trunks. The hatchback is available in all body styles but comes with a different base engine.

Under the hood is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an output of 174 hp. This is only available for the coupe and sedan versions in higher trims. In the EX-L and Sport trims, the hatch gets a slightly more powerful 180-hp engine.

The turbo engines are only available with the CVT, which gives the Hatchback the best gas mileage out of the other Civic models and body styles. It gets an estimated 31 mpg in the city and an impressive 40 mpg on highway roads.

Civic SI

1196 × 482

This performance trim is available in both coupe and sedan body configurations. The main appeal of this version is its engine. It comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder capable of 205 hp, paired with the six-speed automatic transmission.

This engine is the quickest of the pack, able to accelerate from 0-60 in just 6.3 seconds. The SI's exterior has the same sporty appearance as the coupe, plus a cool rear spoiler on the back end.

Which 2020 Honda Civic Model Should I Buy?

If you want to get the maximum performance, the Civic SI and hatchback have the most powerful engines. Both the hatchback and sedan are also the best Civics for families with multiple passengers. These two models have the largest cargo capacities and interiors. The coupe is a great option, either as a Civic or Civic SI, for younger drivers who like glitz without the luxury-car price.

Regardless of which Civic suits you best, all of the models are an excellent value for the price. The base Civic model starts at just under $20k. The turbocharged Civic SI retails for only $26k and performs just as well as pricier rivals.
