2019 Honda Civic: What’s New with the Latest Hatch, Coupe & Sedan?

Refreshed and re-energized, the 2019 Honda Civic has rolled onto the showroom floor here at Kuni Honda on Arapahoe. This people-pleaser looks similar to the 2018 model, but as Mama always says, don’t judge a book by its cover -- regardless of its glistening roof, handsome black trim, and broad shoulders.

We digress. Building its claim as arguably the best car in America, the new Civic gets some pretty significant updates this year, ensuring it will be the proverbial talk of the town come award season.

New For 2019

Although there’s a striking resemblance to its older sibling, the 2019 Honda Civic receives a mild yet obvious styling refresh that makes it its own man. Replacing the previous model’s chrome trim with the aforementioned high-gloss black trim, the ’19 is more subdued—at least in appearance. A reshaped fascia, headlight-to-headlight front splitter, 18-inch alloy wheels, and new exhaust ports add to that flair.

Most notably, both the Civic coupe and sedan are now available as a Sport model, aligning themselves with the Civic Hatchback. However, in an act of defiance, the Civic Sport is equipped with a CVT and standard 2.0L inline-four rather than the same 1.5L turbo-four found in the Civic Hatch Sport. The resulting 22-horsepower difference may seem substantial, but in the grand scheme of things, the Civic coupe and sedan make up for it with exclusive exterior restyling that the hatch doesn’t receive.

Inside, the new Civic is a bit more refined than last year’s model. An overhauled 7.0-inch touchscreen is available on Sport trims and up, and an upgraded version of HondaLink infotainment is standard on all trims except for the base Civic LX. The improvement in overall functionality is quite apparent from the very moment you swipe. Best of all, Honda engineers listened to the people and replaced the volume sliders with a conventional volume knob. (Hip, hip, hooray for voicing your opinions.)

To once again set the industry’s safety bar high, all 2019 Civic sedans and coupes now come with Honda Sensing, which includes Collision Mitigation Braking, Road Departure Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, and Lane Keeping Assist, alongside other driver-assist features. By 2022, all Honda vehicles will be fully equipped with Honda Sensing.
